What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic Dentistry is used to help improve a number of issues with your teeth, some cosmetic or structural.
Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
At the dental office of Dr. Ken Barney in Hedgesville, WV we offer affordable cosmetic dentistry options to improve the appearance and look of your smile. Cosmetic dental treatments include:
- Porcelain Veneers
- Dental Implants
- Teeth Whitening
- Dental Bonding
- Dental Bridges
- Dental Crowns
- Gum Contouring
- Smile Makeovers
Veneers are porcelain covers for your teeth. They do not require removing any teeth, just a simple application of a customized cover. By covering your teeth with veneers, imperfections such as stains or chips can be masked, and your teeth can be made to appear straighter.
Dental Implants are a great alternative to dentures and for replacing missing teeth. They are false teeth made to look like your own. They are implanted into the bone underneath the gums. Unlike dentures, they are permanently in place, and can enable a person to eat foods such as corn on the cob, which were not allowed with dentures.
In-office teeth whitening – Professional whitening treatments are the most popular form of cosmetic dentistry, and involve a series of in-office treatments. The results last longer and are more consistent than those gained with home treatment kits.
Dental bridges are a row of prosthetics that fill in where missing teeth should be and strengthen the surrounding teeth. This helps to stabilize the patient’s bite and keep teeth from moving out of place. When a single tooth needs to be replaced, a bridge can be used in place of complete implants or dentures.
The crown on your tooth is the area just below the gum-line on your top row of teeth, and above the gum-line on your bottom teeth. A dental crown is a cover or cap created to cover this area and addresses a variety of tooth conditions. Teeth that contain damage or are missing entirely may require crowns to restore the appearance of the tooth and smile overall.
Smile makeovers can involve a number of treatments, including all the above. They are typically for purely cosmetic reasons, to restore the beauty of your smile.
Dental Bonding is a popular dental treatment to improve the appearance of a discolored or chipped tooth. Additional uses include larger cavities needing fillings, to fixing the appearance of crooked teeth, and even correcting gaps.
A bonding agent is applied to the teeth to whiten and fill in any holes, and then bonded to the tooth with a high-intensity light. The end result is a smile with white, smooth teeth that look as good as veneers. Tooth bonding can replace more expensive treatments like porcelain veneers.
Gum Contouring treatment is used to fix gums that cover too much of the teeth, or gums that are too high. Gum contouring is an in-office surgical treatment that evens out your gum-line.
Candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments
Prior to any procedure, Dr. Barney will discuss your medical history, lifestyle habits, and expectations to see if you’re a candidate for treatment. You will discuss any issues you may have with your teeth or your smile. Together, you will then decide which treatment will accomplish the results you seek.
Am I Too Old for Cosmetic Procedures?
It depends on the condition of your teeth and which procedure you are considering. If you would like to replace teeth with implants instead of dentures, for example, this is possible. But certain treatments, such as bonding, require that your teeth are strong and have healthy enamel.
If I Have Sensitive Teeth Can I Get Teeth Whitening?
This depends on the level of sensitivity in your teeth and which whitening treatments you use. Store-purchased treatments could leave you in pain, but in-office laser treatment may work perfectly and without sensitivity. Before performing any procedure, Dr. Barney will let you know whether you qualify.
Replacing Dentures with Dental Implants
Dr. Barney can replace your older, bulky dentures with new implants, making your teeth permanent, enabling you to eat foods you’ve had to avoid, and eliminating your denture-care routine forever.
