What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain Veneers are a cosmetic dental option to correct the look of teeth, without having surgery. Veneers are dental adhesives made of porcelain, and custom-made to fit over your own teeth. This gives them a completely natural look, and allows the light to hit them just right for a natural texture and appearance.
Porcelain veneers can help hide imperfections such as stains, chips, or gaps in your teeth. However, although they can help disguise imperfections, veneers are not a solution to serious dental problems or cavities. They are a cosmetic dental procedure only.
Porcelain Veneers Procedure
Porcelain Veneer Process:
Step 1. Dr. Barney and his staff will examine your teeth to ensure that they are healthy and require no treatments such as fillings before getting the veneers put on. Your teeth must be in good condition, and strong enough to support the veneers over time.
Step 2. Next, you will have about ½ millimeter of your tooth enamel shaved off. This makes room for the veneers on your teeth, without weighing them down more than is natural. It also provides the best surface for the veneers to adhere to.
Step 3. After the enamel removal, you will have a mold made of your mouth in order to have your veneers customized. This will ensure that they fit your teeth exactly, for a look that is both natural and straight. Dr. Barney then orders your veneers from a laboratory, which will make them from the mold. During this time, you can opt to wear temporary veneers to cover imperfections.
Step 4. When your veneers are ready, you return for a bonding procedure where the veneers are cemented to your teeth. Your teeth are first polished and cleaned, and then the veneers are attached.
Step 5. After a few weeks, you will return to the office to make sure everything is going well with your new veneers.
Veneers Before & After
Am I a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
When considering veneers, it is important to first ensure that your teeth will be able to handle them. You need to qualify with the following criteria:
- Your teeth are healthy – If you have any cavities, missing teeth, badly broken or cracked teeth, or very weakened teeth or gums, you will need to have these issues addressed before getting veneers. Putting the veneers on weak or impaired teeth can be painful and is pointless, as they won’t last.
- Your oral habits – If you often clench or tighten your jaw, or grind your teeth, you may not be a good candidate for veneers. These habits can cause the veneers to crack or break, ruining the underlying teeth in the process.
- Your tooth alignment – Veneers can correct crooked teeth to a degree. If you have crooked or overlapping teeth, they may require correction first.
How Long do Porcelain Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers have a typical lifespan of about 10 years. Some people find they need replacing after five. This is mostly dependent on your lifestyle, and what sort of shape your teeth were in before veneer placement. After the veneers wear out, you will need to have new ones made.
Do Veneers Protect Teeth?
Even while wearing veneers, the teeth underneath can decay and weaken. If this happens, veneers can fall off, and sometimes the teeth get too thin for the veneers. Once this happens, you can not have the procedure again.
You care for teeth with veneers the same as you would your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing are important, as well as regular checkups with the dentist.
